The importance of insulation resistance (IR)
The integrity of electrical insulation resistance (IR) is central to the safe and reliable operation of subsea and surface electrical systems. As insulation naturally degrades over time due to moisture ingress, thermal cycling, or ageing, IR values decline. When plotted as an “IR vs Time” curve, this degradation trend helps operators understand how quickly system integrity is deteriorating and when intervention or preventative action is required.
